Bring a credit card. Your credit cards are generally accepted at the two major shopping malls (Carrefour and Geant), bigger hotels, restaurants in such places as Du Lac and La Marsa, and even the Monoprix (smaller grocery stores). You can pay for cell phone, local phone, water, and electricity online via credit card. ATMs will allow you to withdraw from checking accounts; but watch your fees carefully. ATMs will also allow credit card advances, but you will find the fees very expensive.
Bring U.S. dollars to exchange for dinars at many banks; those that provide this service typically have a digital sign indicating exchange rate. 1 USD (U.S. dollar) = 1.3 dinars (average). You will usually find the exchange rate better at a bank as compared with a local “money changing” spot. Personal bank accounts can be started simply with a passport and a few other items that are accessible. |
