Use taxi cabs and buses. These fill the streets. A cab fee usually starts at 380 millemes (about 25 cents) and goes up about 30 millemes every 20 seconds; depending on traffic, rides can range from 1 to 10 dinars ($.75 to $7.50), and they average about 3 dinars. Traffic near the center of town is almost always dense and difficult.

Be careful when entering the road whether on foot or in a car. Anything goes on the road (for example, left turns from the far right lane)! Police will often direct traffic in opposition to the lights, while standing in the middle of an intersection.
Save money by using the small metro system which has some major east/west and north/south lines. This system is much less expensive, but can take up to five times as long as a taxi.
Travel by train for longer distances to other towns. You can travel by train for relatively good rates and the trips are not too difficult to arrange. Tunisia is divided into 26 states and has been governed as an independent republic for the last 53 years. Two million Tunisia's 10 million people live in the Tunis area. Sfax is the second biggest city, about 5 hours drive south of Tunis.
Travel just south to visit big tourist areas. These are just 1 to 2 hours drive from Tunis along the coast. These areas include: Neubel, Hammamet, and Sousee. Inland, directly south lies a more desert region with tourist attractions, including sites of famous movies like Star Wars, and The English Patient. |
