There are several places in Tunisia which offer thermal spa treatments and one of the most accessible is at Korbous on Cap Bon, just outside Tunis. Known to be helpful to those with arthritis and bronchitis, several of the nearby spas look more like hospitals than hotels!
Korbous is a tiny settlement reached by driving along winding roads which are lined with wild flowers in the spring. The dramatic scenery is lovely at any time of year. Just after Soliman, the village of Korbous can be seen at the bottom of a steep valley or ravine. The thermal waters were discovered here during Roman times when they were known as ‘Aquae Carpitane’. The underground rooms which were used are still evident here. Seven springs pour out of the rocks, and legend has it that each has a different healing property. The water is warm, up to 16C (60F) and crowds of locals can often be seen at the foot of the cascades, where the warm, sulphurous water pours down the rocks and into the sea. This location is about one kilometer north of Korbous at Ait Atrous. Look for the cluster of cafés which mark the strategic point. One of the main spas is the ‘Etablissement Thermal’ which opened as a health spa in 1901. The ruins of a former Presidential Palace which once belonged to Habib Bourguiba can still be seen on the cliffs above the springs.
The spring waters at Ain Oktor, just south of Korbous is where the mineral water is bottled. Alternatively you can get a free sample from the water fountain in the forecourt of the Okto Hotel.
If you do not want to bathe with the crowds, visit the local hammam in Korbous, where a swimming costume is necessary to participate in this local experience. |
