Tunisia is a wonderful gateway to the mysterious East, and the deliciously different food can be is an adventure of discovery. As prices are comparatively low for eating out in Tunisia, you can push the boat out once in a while and dine at the very best restaurant.
If you are staying in the Sidi Bou Said area, that would be the Dar Zarrouk Restaurant, without a doubt. This restaurant is in such demand that reservations are advisable to avoid disappointment or a long wait. Step through the small blue door within the large arched doorway and prepare for a gastronomic treat. This gourmet restaurant can be found in the Hotel Dar Said, which is located in the very heart of this charming old city. Even if you can’t afford to stay at the Dar Said, which is said to be Africa’s best boutique hotel, anyone can enjoy the restaurant. The view alone is worth dropping in for, with breathtaking views of the Tunis Gulf from the delightful terrace. The cuisine is fairly local, offering Tunisian specialties and Mediterranean-type dishes. As you would expect from a top-notch restaurant, the atmosphere is formal and the service is impeccable. It is spacious and elegant, with tables arranged al fresco around the courtyard. The minimalist Arabic décor and charming interior sets the scene, along with the magnificent sunset, if you are lucky! The menu is mouth-watering, even if you don’t know quite what all the dishes are. The fish couscous is highly recommended, or be guided by the waiter. Lamb is another popular choice and goes down well with one of the local wines. Whatever you order it will be better than you could imagine or hope for. Although the bill is quite steep (expect to pay English prices, or a little higher than in the US), the experience is priceless, the meal will be memorable and the photographs will take you back time and time again! |
