Our town is already growing on me.
We live on the outskirts of the downtown area which lends itself to a quieter, more laid back neighborhood. We live in a third floor apartment that I love! (Although the hard, cold tile floors are taking some getting used to).
We have incredible views and if you ever want to be awed, please come and look out our kitchen window at sunset! The room fills up with golden light and the clouds over the mountains reminds us that our Lord is amongst them.
I am quickly finding that a typical afternoon of running errands is quite different than the States. The concept of "onestop shopping" has not made it to North Africa. Therefore, a productive day is when I have managed to come home with groceries! I have already been to the market several times and officially have a favorite fruit a vegetable stand (the guys there like to make fun of my Arabic), as well as a butcher. Advertising also takes on a different form at the souq (market) than in the States. There are not signs posted to describe what is inside the store and what specials are going on...they just hang up whatever is in the shop that day...and I mean WHATEVER. If a cow has just been butchered, its head is hanging in the entry way, and so on and so forth. My initial thoughts upon living here keep going back to what plenty we have in the West. My hope is that this year I will begin to let go of the desire to have and embrace the ones that have not.
