Ifyou want to ship some things home in a fairly cheap and simple way, you can send them by air freight. We say "simple" and "cheap," but it will not be either if you don't know how to navigate the system. Here's the point by point events when me and my friend Steve went just recently. Hopefully you'll find some tips to keep the process moving along:
(1) When we arrived at station there was a group of men vying to take our boxe or crates. They expected a 5 TND tip. But for the service of taking our heavy load from the car to the customs area for weighing and processing, its was worth it. (2) We then proceeded to your airline of choice. Its best to choose an airline that goes frequently to the city where you are headed. For example, Air France has regular routes to Houston, TX, but not Dallas. British Air has regular routes to Dallas, but not Houston, etc. (3) We provided the airline with some simple pieces of information including: number of pieces, approximate weight, destination, contact information, and the dimensions of your pieces. They gave us a quote, and a few pieces of paper for the different parts of the process. (4) We then proceed to aquire the official weight back to your friendly porters who took our boxes and are waiting for you and their eventual tip (5) After weighing the items we delivered them to the Customs (Douane) station. They held the items until we obtained a signature from a special customs officer (your friendly porters might help you find this person). (6) The customs officer in an office about a 100 meters from the dock signed our papers on the back corner and then we went right back to the area where our boxes were. (7) Before we could go into the area were our boxes were we had to give our ID cards to a place just before the opening labeled "Magasin" (8) We then entered the holding area, a wharehouse with boxes and crates everywhere. An inspector proceeded to open and "fiddle" with each one asking questions about the items. He occasionally would laugh and show them to others or toss the football around from the toy chest. (9) After the "inspection" is over we proceeded right back to the same officer who signed the paper. She signed it again and pointed us to another office for another signature. (10) We then went back to the air frieght office to pay and recieve arrival dates and confirmation numbers. Well, maybe its not so easy. But, once you get the hang of it you might find it preferable to the postal service or lugging some big bags through the airport!
