The lovely Belvedere Park in Tunis is a beautiful green oasis just to the north of the city, off Avenue Taieb Mehiri. It covers 110 hectares and was established in 1892 on a hill of olive tress, but only opened to the public in 1910, once the plants were well established.
The park is a popular gathering place for families and young couples. It is a delightful place to visit at the end of a day in the busy city and offers a rare green park area for the local Tunisians. At the centre of the park is a koubba (Turkish pavilion) which provides an excellent view over the city. This lovely white building has typically Tunisian architecture. Inside, the high domed ceilings are wonderfully decorated and intricately patterned. The white interior makes it feels cool and airy. The park also has a contemporary art gallery close to the entrance gate. There is a pretty lake on Place Pasteur, with local cafés doing a roaring trade at the weekends when the area is packed with local families. The whole area is beautifully planted with lush palm trees clustered around the fountains on the lake. The Tunis Hilton Hotel overlooks the park and is popular with business guests. Next to Belvedere park is Tunis Zoo. It has a range of animal and bird species in its huge expanse. After viewing the monkeys, elephants, deer, peacocks etc you can cool off by the lovely Lake Tunis and enjoy a drink under the shady trees.
